Construction of the heritage tramway in the Wynyard Quarter is about to begin. It will see the return of electric trams to Auckland for the first time in 50 years.

The 1.5km loop will run clockwise along Jellicoe St, down Halsey St, along Gaunt St and up Daldy St. Trams will be in service for the 2011 World Rugby Cup.

This means there will be an intense period of construction between now and then, beginning at the intersection of Gaunt and Halsey Streets. Traffic will need to be rerouted around the tram works, which will be carried out in sections.

This is a heads up that work is likely to start over the Christmas and New Year holiday period - it could be as early as 27 December, as final arrangements are rapidly falling into place.

The aim is to tackle the hardest part of the job during the quieter holiday period, to minimise disruption to businesses, residents and traffic. This involves laying the curved track at the corner of Gaunt and Daldy, and at the corner of Gaunt and Halsey.

This project will be moving quickly, so we wanted to get in touch with everyone in the neighbourhood before people disperse for holidays and good cheer.

We're setting up a new tramway section on our website www.waterfrontauckland.co.nz/trams - you'll find more detailed information there, as well as updates.

The project includes the laying of tracks and road renewal, as well as installing the over-head wires at approximately 6m in height. The tramway will be very similar in appearance to MOTAT's in Western Springs and the heritage circuit in Christchurch.

We expect contractors will be in touch with individual businesses and building occupiers before they start any work near your place, but if you have any questions in the meantime please get in touch with us at the Waterfront Auckland. We're around the corner at 11 Westhaven Drive.

Thanks for bearing with us over the next few months; these are truly busy times. Have a Merry Christmas and prosperous New Year.
